This huge luxury hotel stands adjacent to.Riidhuset (the Town Hall) at the western end of Stmget. The Palace was built in 1907-10 (by Anton Rosen), just after the Town Hall was finished, to provide prestigious accommodation for visiting officials coming for business at the then-new Riidhuset. Housed in a massive building dating back to 1780, the Phoenix is one of Copenhagen's classiest and most extravagant hotels: the flashy foyer has tall mirrors, a fountain, huge candelabras and paintings. Its chic location, between Kongens Nytorv and Amalienborg Slot, means the hotel is surrounded by some of Copenhagen's hottest modern art galleries and antique dealers. Favoured by showbiz types and jet-setters with good taste (as oppQsed to nouveauriche show-offs), the hotel has elegant bedrooms, decorated 'il la Louis XVI', and the owner, who is passionate about art, displays only originals on his walls. The hotel is appropriately named since it has closed and reopened three times, arising from its ashes most recently in 1991, when it was entirely refurbished under the present management.

This formerly economy-class hotel was transformed by a major renovation in spring 2000. It's located in the middle of the red light district (a five-minute walk to Central Station), the most popular neighbourhood for Copenhagen hotels. The rooms are agreeably decorated in light colours, and the hotel is notable for its friendly service. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard at the back if you want to avoid the traffic noise.

One of Copenhagen's newest posh hotels, the Copenhagen Strand is located overlooking the water towards Christianshavn, just south of Nyhavn. Most of the city's attractions are within easy walking distance, and boats to Sweden, and the only direct bus to the airport, stop just outside.
